Life is Always Interesting

So Thursday after I returned from Docker River, I headed to the RSPCA to pick out a kitty. First I started in the adult male cage - that was a mistake. They had just moved all of their adult tom cats into the same cage, and not all were neutered, so there was still a bit of hissing and growling. I picked up the completely black kitty and he jumped right down, not interested in doing much of anything. Then I picked up a faded grey tabby with a shortened tail. He was a former stray from the streets and I should have known better. He was very affectionate but when I went to put him down, he bit me, HARD! My hand started bleeding like a stuck pig and so I was less than impressed with that kitty. Holding my hand with the feral bite, I thought I should check out the kitten cage instead. The first little grey kitten ran under the bed anytime I tried to catch it, got it up once and it just wanted to get down. So then I spotted the 6 month old kitten, and he came right over and let me hold him. It wasn't love at first sight or anything, but I did feel a bit of a connection, so I signed up to adopt this tabby. I have to leave him there until Tuesday so he can get neutered, as he is just old enough to get it done now. I've named him Dundee...and when he comes back to Canada in a few years with me, he will be Dundee from central Australia...lol.

So the cat bite turned out to be a bit of bother. After I left the RSPCA, I went home with my friend F. and we sat out for a few beers before she headed home. I went in the house to watch some telly and when I woke up (from drifting off) my finger was quite swollen and throbbing. Hmmm...perhaps I should get that checked out. Do I go to the ER? It could be hours to be seen...but then I read about cat bites and how nasty they can turn if not looked after properly, so I off I drove to the ER in my jammies. I checked in quite quickly, was triaged, and then sat for hours...3 hours...while they dropped off drunk after drunk who was seen before me. I ended up getting pissed off and leaving at 1am...I had some antibiotics from the travel clinic last year and looked them up on the net for their range of uses, and skin infections was one of them, so I popped a couple of those and went to bed.
The cat bite was still swollen in the morning and looking worse, so I went in to work for a short bit before deciding to head to the hospital for another try...surely there won't be as many drunks in the early morning...I was right and got seen within 30 minutes, thankfully. They prescribed a second antibiotic along with what I was taking and hung my arm in a sling and sent me on my way. I came home and rested for most of the day before heading to the grocery store for much needed provisions...I was having a housewarming party the next day so needed something to serve these folks! I had grand ideas of all that I would cook up, bake up, and serve...it went out the window with one hand incapacitated so I bought all premade stuff...
Last night was the party, and pre-party chopping of veggies and cheese was taken care of my good friend F. who gratefully did this for me. Then the drinking began...several folks from work wandered in and out, and a group of us took it well into the night and about 10pm, my neighbor K. showed up, wine glass and wine bottle in hand. It was clearly not the first bottle she had drunk by this point...she said she was heading to bed but heard us on the patio and knew she would not get any sleep, so decided to join us instead. Well, that was an interesting change of events. K. is Australian and has lived all over the world. Interesting life to share, but then she decided to start mauling everyone with scalp and shoulder massages that were just plain weird with a bunch of people you don't know. She is in her mid-late 50's so it was just a little bizarre. She made her way around the table, mauling each one of us, until she was finally asked to sit down and stop it. Then she began calling my new friend K. (there were three Ks at the party) the worm, and we didn't quite figure out why...and would ask us if we knew about the worm, and then made all kinds of strange references to the worm that made no sense. Apparently it was about some book, but by this point neighbor K was pretty drunk and making little sense...
She finally managed to offend new friend K who then went home. We of course, continued to drink. Then neighbor K. wanted to dance, but no one else was partaking...then she got up to go somewhere and nearly went through my large paned bedroom window, falling across the chair in front of it, so we decided it was time that neighbor K was escorted home...it was a bit of a challenge but I managed to toss her inside her door and send her on her way. My friends were a little freaked out, but as one friend put it, it made our drunken selves look so much more lucid...
So today I have a headache and woke to a bit of a mess from food and drink. G. slept over in his swag, laid out in his car, and came in for a cup of coffee in the morning before heading home. My finger is still sore, but the swelling finally seems to be coming down, which is good news. Tuesday I pick up Dundee and my life will change again. I've missed having a kitty. I feel rather foolish talking to myself, as it is so much better when there is a cat to debrief with...
